As a Principal Lecturer & Head of Drums & Percussion at BIMM University, we asked Pat about the advantages of studying at higher education level, what admission numbers are like for female and transgender drummers, plus how BIMM is supportive and encourages those applicants.  Pat spoke to us frankly and honestly about the added scrutiny that female drummers should be prepared for, and how so many of our choices as female drummers will affect the way that we are viewed online and in music.

Pat also talks about living in burn out, his rule of three, and how he values family life above everything else.

A hugely talented drummer and educator, Pat has a very impressive CV and is a member of the instrumental (progressive tinged) Ozric Tentacles.

Somehow, alongside his hectic playing schedule Pat has managed to fit in a whole other career as one of the finest educators in the UK. He is the Principal Lecturer at BIMM University in Brighton and has made 100 of contributions to drumming magazines from across the globe, including a regular contribution to the sorely missed Rhythm Magazine.

This week we’re joined by George’s current drum teacher Pat Garvey.

Pat is regarded as one of the country's leading educators both privately and in the popular music education scene. We had a lovely natter about his practice routine, improving as a player, teaching classes versus one-to-one and how the industry has changed for drummers and what impact that has on popular music courses. We also find out about how he got into drumming and more about one of his teachers, Bob Armstrong, plus find out how George stood out in his final performance at BIMM!
